The Lead Police Officer, specialized security operations, (Sergeant / GS-0083) is responsible to the shift supervisor (Lieutenant) for the enforcement of federal and appropriate criminal codes and Department of Veterans Affairs regulations originating in the federal statues in the physical protection of patients, members, visitors and employees; in the protection of property of the United States Government and personal property on the medical grounds; protection of the civil rights of all individuals while on federally owned property; and in the preservation of the peaceful environment requisite of the operation of the medical treatment programs. Actively participates in specialized security operations during peak hours of out-patient traffic. During emergency situations, provides the necessary direction of force, control, assistance or coordination required of the situation. Makes crime scene assessments, arrests or directs the arrest of individuals who have violated the law. Advises the supervisor on officers' performance, progress and training needs. Collect and tabulate statistical data. Adheres to Medical Center policies and regulations. Utilizes experience, social awareness, tact and communication skills to monitor situations arising during deployment of specialized security operations. Receives informal complaints and grievances and attempts to resolve them informally whenever possible. Responsible for making day to day work adjustments in accordance with regulations, guidelines or priorities. Gives on the job training to new employees. Monitors the performance of duties assigned. Spot checks areas to assure that tasks have been completed. Exercises maximum degree of communication with shift and the on-duty supervisor. Ensures training is completed. Communicates effectively. Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note:

Experience:
One (1) Year of Specialized experience (at GS-6 level) that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA'S) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forest, or other natural resources or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Physical Requirements:
A high state of physical condition must be maintained. On a regular and recurring basis, duties require considerable and strenuous physical exertion. This includes frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, walking while on patrol and/or running while pursuing observed violators or suspects in serious crimes, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching and crawling in restricted areas, such as pipes, basements or interstitial and working outside in all types of weather. On a regular and recurring basis, work requires strenuous exertion in physically restraining disorderly individuals to prevent harm to others or the individual. In emergency or unusual situations, takes prompt action that may require arduous physical exertion to accomplish an action. In a stressful environment must exercise a high degree of skill in meeting and dealing with all types of individuals and temperaments that will foster a favorable police/community relation image. The Lead Police Officer is expected to maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and uniformed appearance. Is expected to check assigned, utilized or issued equipment for their own personal safety as well as the safety of all persons entering the Medical Center grounds.
