Addiction Therapist

Screens and conducts evaluations of Veterans and suggests recommended level of substance abuse treatment for Veterans who have concurrent major psychiatric, personality, medical, or psychosocial disorders. Performs screening of veterans for substance abuse treatment and completes all necessary intake assessment forms. Conducts groups, family, and/or individual counseling sessions; observes patient behaviors and reaction patterns for use by higher level professionals in reviewing and modifying treatment planning as well as discharge planning. Develops the treatment plan process in conjunction and consultation with other professional members of the interdisciplinary team. As the case manager for the overall treatment of substance abuse on an interdisciplinary treatment team, works with other professional to formulate treatment and follow-up plans for each patient assigned. Provides consultation to, and where appropriate, leadership of the therapeutic community groups (e.g., decision making, planning, and special activity groups). Arranges referral of patients to other Federal agencies, state, and other public as well as private organizations. Gives advice and guidance to patients relative to benefits and services provided with the VA and the local community, along with eligibility requirements. Work Schedule:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT - Applicants must first meet one of the basic requirements listed below:
Having a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to this position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR Having four (4) years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Having a combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) SPECIALIZED
Experience:
In addition to meeting the above requirements, applicants must also have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes:
having knowledge of principles, concepts and methodology used in Substance Abuse treatment; capable of applying principles, concepts and practices of Substance Abuse Treatment sufficient to perform difficult assignments; having skills in fact finding and analysis to identify relevant information gathered from interviews; observations; relate the information to the problem; summarize and document the information, and determine if more information is required; gather and analyzes facts and draw appropriate conclusions; capable of transitioning a patient through the assessment/screening to completion and placement in the community; ability to operate automated data systems, and to effectively communicate information clearly, orally, and in writing. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Successful completion of two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree with a in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position to substitute for the one year of experience, is fully qualifying for the GS-9. OR COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) - Combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
